They finally meet and all hell breaks loose. Is this the end of Rod Richards?

The cure is promising great results, but with a deadly catch: the patient's DNA is altered from excessive bonding with their pets. Under severe atmospheric disruptions during the dark hours, the humans unknowingly morph into killing monsters with their pets. Think Stephen King/Michael Crichton from a scientific/medical perspective. Somebody has to stop them: but who? Do you coddle your pet to include kissing them? Might think twice after reading this story! The novel could be headed to filmdom with Netflix.
